up skirt uprise

While discussing the pornography leak in mainstream media an image scene multiple times is that of an up-skirt photo, mostly revolving around the celebrity circle.

These pictures not only circulate through the internet porn market but often make front page news with articles mostly blaming these female celebrities for THEIR mistake when it becomes apparent photographers often try to put themselves in the position to capture such a photo at such a vulnerable spot when they get out of the car.  In other cases where people were discovered purposely taking such pictures there were often criminal charges following.

This trend has more recently surfaced in advertisement, specifically in an American Apparel ad.

American Apparel                                                                 This ad is supposed to be advertising the skirt, however most gazes don't make it past the underwear.  With a hundred better angles to properly show the qualities of the skirt for sale, you must ask why did the advertisers choose this type of position?  Why would you want to draw less attention to your product and more to a models body part?  By relating their products with such a position it allows for the pornographic depiction of women on a large scale and select, young audience.  By associating products with these pornographic depictions it allows for a constant leak of pornographic tropes and influence on women in mainstream media.

  1. I like that you showed the advertisement for the skirt and coinciding that with the porn industry. This goes with the article we read in class, "The Pornography of Everyday Life." The article claimed objectification from porn leaks into mainstream media, which is does in the case of your advertisement. All you see are the model's legs and covered vagina, and ultimately no head or face to the identify of the model. The objectification of the model- or now she is a doll because of she has no human attributes- leads to the sense of decoration and entertainment.

  2. The advertising aspect is interesting because it so publicly displays pornographic images and people appear to be accepting it. I just came across a similar example on the front page of tobi.com, a women's clothing website. It depicts a girl in a dress that is being blown upwards to show her underwear. It amazes me because this is on the front page, you cannot miss it because you must click "Shop Tobi," which is ironically placed on her butt, to enter the website! The only difference between this and the American Apparel ad is that you can see her face as well as most of her body; however, the whole ad is still horrible in general because of the pornographic message it gives off.
